JAIRUS MCLEARY

Director, The Work

Jairus McLeary was born in Evanston Illinois and grew up in the north suburbs of Chicago, known as the the locus of many of John Hughes’ most popular films.

Inspired by this, he dreamed of one day becoming a filmmaker while studying Cultural Anthropology and Film Studies at the University of Illinois at Champaign Urbana, taking a particular interest in Video Ethnography.

After college, Jairus became a Legal Videographer for civil court related proceedings in Chicago, shooting and editing media for use in trial until he moved to Los Angeles and spent 8 years working in the independent film industry. 

THE WORK had its world premiere in competition at SxSW where it earned the grand jury prize for best documentary and has gone on to screen at over 50 film festivals worldwide, garnering numerous accolades and spots on many end of year best of film lists such as the Village Voice and Rolling Stone. 

THE WORK was one of three documentaries listed on the Guardians top 50 films of 2017 and one of seven films to earn a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes for the year.
